Firefighters contain brush fire in Carlsbad

January 21, 2021 By sdcnews

CARLSBAD–A fast-moving brush fire broke out Wednesday afternoon that forced the evacuation of more than 200 homes near the Agua Hedionda Lagoon in Carlsbad, according to the Carlsbad Police Department.

Firefighters from Carlsbad, Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos, Encinitas, San Diego, and Cal Fire, responded to the three-acre blaze shortly before 2 p.m. near a hillside on Park Drive, and near Sunnyhill and Marina Drives.

Mandatory evacuations were ordered in Bristol Cove, Capri, Adams Street, Park and Highland Drives. Evacuees were sent to The Shoppes at Carlsbad parking lot while fire crews battled the blaze. The Red Cross was on site to provide evacuees with water and snacks.

Fire crews were able to extinguish the fire at about 3:20 p.m. There were no reports of structural damage to nearby homes, or injuries.

Evacuations were lifted, and residents were allowed to return home. Some roads were reopened to traffic except for Park, Cove and Bayshore Drives.

Fire crews will work overnight to mop up the burned vegetation, and check for any hot spots in the area.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to authorities.
