Feeding San Diego, Veterans Village of San Diego to host food distribution for the military community

May 27, 2021 By sdcnews

San Diego, CA–Ahead of Memorial Day, Feeding San Diego will host a special free food distribution for veterans and military families that is also a day of service for residents of Veterans Village of San Diego.

In partnership with the Veterans Village of San Diego, a “Veterans Helping Veterans” food distribution will be held on Thursday, May 27 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Pechanga Arena San Diego (3500 Sports Arena Blvd, San Diego, CA 92110) in a drive-through format. At the distribution, residents of Veterans Village will volunteer to distribute food, including fresh produce, dry goods, and a frozen meat protein, to San Diego’s military community. This event is the chance for veterans to extend their hands and hearts to provide the gift of food ahead of a holiday that honors and remembers fallen comrades.

This distribution is part of Feeding San Diego’s Feeding Heroes initiative, which reaches every corner of the county—on or near base, in military housing areas, and in public schools serving a high percentage of military families. Feeding San Diego works directly with partner organizations that serve military families, helping to combat hunger quickly and efficiently. Although the families of military members stationed in San Diego do not necessarily choose where they live, they do face the reality of the high cost-of-living.

“Feeding San Diego is proud to support our military community every single day, but as we approach Memorial Day we are especially aware of the sacrifices they make for us,” said Dan Shea, CEO of Feeding San Diego. “To see veterans stepping up to serve the community is an amazing thing and will help to ensure that veterans and active-duty military families don’t have to worry about putting food on the table.”

“When we give to our neighbors, we give to ourselves. The gift we receive is in knowing that we are building a stronger community by sewing into its most vulnerable members,” said Akilah Templeton, President and CEO of Veterans Village of San Diego.

The “Veterans Helping Veterans” distribution is a site that falls under Feeding San Diego’s Together Tour, a series of large-scale free food distributions that have been serving San Diegans facing hunger at sites across the county. Since the pandemic hit in March 2020, hunger has been on the rise, and the Together Tour provides a lifeline to those who are still getting back on their feet during recovery. This includes veterans and military families.
