SAN DIEGO–Jared Blumenfeld, Regional Administrator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Pacific Southwest Region, will deliver the keynote address for this year’s BioCycle West Coast Conference, which takes place Tuesday, April 13 at the Town & Country Hotel in San Diego.
The BioCycle Conference seeks to advance renewable energy and compost production by diverting food scraps and organics from landfills. The conference engages over 400 representatives from communities, government, tribes, academia and industry.
Blumenfeld will be joined by Nikki Henderson from People’s Grocery and Brenda Smyth from CalRecycle. The moderator will be Nora Goldstein, Editor of BioCycle Magazine.
This year’s conference is co-sponsored by EPA’s Pacific Southwest Region. While previous conferences focused largely on large-scale organics recycling, this year represents a shift to include practitioners of smaller-scale technologies. In partnership with BioCycle, EPA created a track focusing on the challenges and benefits of implementing organics recycling projects in tribal and rural communities.
This four-day event is sponsored by The JG Press, Inc., the publisher of BioCycle, a monthly magazine on composting, organics recycling and renewable energy. BioCycle celebrated its 50th year of publishing in 2009. The conference highlights organic residuals projects across the nation, providing technical information to participants. On Thursday, April 15, conference participants will tour local composting facilities including the City of San Diego’s Greenery, Agri Service Inc.’s El Corazon facility in Oceanside and a small-scale operation at the Pala Band of Mission Indian’s Transfer Station in Pala.
