EL CAJON—One elderly woman suffered serious burns Monday morning after fire broke out at a two-story apartment complex in El Cajon.
Heartland Fire and Rescue crews from El Cajon, assisted by crews from San Miguel Fire, Santee Fire and Lakeside Fire, were dispatched to the complex just before 8 a.m.
The apartment unit was fully engulfed in flames by the time fire crews arrived at the scene, according to fire investigators.
The blaze extended from the first floor onto the second floor, and also caught a neighboring apartment unit on fire. Fire crews were able to control the blaze within twenty minutes. One elderly female suffered significant burns to her back along with smoke inhalation and was transported to the hospital.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. There were no firefighter injuries reported. Estimated damage to the structure and contents is estimated at $500,000.
