SAN DIEGO–DangerHouse Productions, the irreverent, theatre troupe with a solid set of successful plays, announces its next production, “The Love Suicides at Amijima” and a new theatre location – Liberty Hall at Paradise Village.
“The Love Suicides at Amijima” by Chikamatsu Monzaemon tells the tale of a tragic love between Jihei, a married paper merchant, and Koharu, a courtesan. This well-known Japanese story, written in 1720, calls to mind the famous “star-crossed” lovers Romeo and Juliet. At the onset of the play, Jihei and Koharu have already entered into a suicide pact. Each must face various social and political obstacles set before them in order to fulfill their promise of love and death. The play inspired the 1969 film “Double Suicide”, which won awards for Best Film, Best Actress, and Best Director at two of Japan’s highest film awards. The play has rarely been performed here in the U.S., and it is currently understood to be the West Coast Premiere.
The play was first staged during the Seventeenth-Century Boom, when many famines killed thousands, infanticide was being practiced with overwhelming numbers, and living costs were rising.
Performances: Aug. 13-28, Thursdays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.
