Encinitas, CA–A 39-year-old dance instructor was arrested Tuesday on charges of sexually abusing his former dance students.
David Silvas is facing charges of assault with intent to commit rape, sexual assault of a child under 14 years old, and other sexually-related felony offenses.
Due to policy, the Sheriff’s Department does not release the identity of child abuse victims.
In July of 2020, a 30-year-old woman came to the North Coastal Sheriff’s Station and reported her former dance instructor had sexually molested her on several occasions. She told deputies the incidents started when she was only 12 years old and went on until she was 17. She says the abuse occurred at various locations including the Callahan Institute of the Arts in the 1500 block of El Camino Real in Encinitas. The dance studio under the name Callahan Institute of the Arts has been closed for several years.
The case was referred to the Sheriff’s Child Abuse Unit. During the course of the investigation, detectives identified and located three more victims. The girls were between 13 and 16 years old at the time of the incidents. The alleged assaults happened at dance studios, dance meets or competitions, and house parties in San Diego and Los Angeles Counties from 2005 to 2014.
Silvas was arrested at his home in Vista on Tuesday and is currently being held without bail at the Vista Detention Facility.
While multiple alleged victims have been identified, Sheriff’s Child Abuse detectives believe there are both additional victims and possible witnesses to these crimes.
