EL CAJON–As crews continue to contain a fire near Campo and hot, dry weather is forecast inland through tomorrow, the County Office of Emergency Services is reminding residents to take two minutes to register their cell phone numbers with AlertSanDiego to receive emergency updates in a disaster.
“Fortunately, the current fire is not threatening homes, but we can’t predict when a more dangerous fire will start. Registering your cell phone number with AlertSanDiego is a simple way to make sure you and your family can get emergency notifications, even when you are away from your home phone,” said Ron Lane, Director of the Office of Emergency Services.
The County launched a registration campaign September 1 in conjunction with National Preparedness Month, and is asking people to help spread the word by e-mailing or posting information about the campaign to friends and family. Almost 4,000 people have registered since Wednesday.
Residents can also be prepared by creating a defensible space around their homes, which means clearing combustible trees and plants within a 100-foot radius of any structures, and creating a family disaster plan and emergency kit with food, water and other supplies.
