County Supervisor Slater-Price recognizes Autism Awareness Month

April 7, 2011 By sdcnews

SAN DIEGO–County Supervisor Pam Slater-Price Wednesday awarded proclamations recognizing Autism Awareness Month.

“It’s really pervasive and we don’t really know it,” the Supervisor said of the neurobiological disorder. “Unless (patients) are able to be treated early, they can end up having a lot of problems in their lives.”

Receiving the county proclamations were officials from Rady Children’s Hospital-Autism Discovery Institute and the Autism Society of San Diego.

One in 110 children is born with the disorder, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have identified as a national public health crisis. Autism inhibits a person’s ability to communicate and develop social relationships and is often accompanied by behavioral challenges.

In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, the exterior lighting of the County Administration letter will illuminate the building in blue.
