County Supervisor Horn promotes “Eat Local, Buy California Grown” campaign

March 25, 2012 By sdcnews

SAN DIEGO–Farm fresh and home grown… California has it all. So when you go shopping for fresh fruits and vegetables, eat local, and buy California grown. That was the message this morning from County Supervisor Bill Horn and at a press conference at Mission Hills Nursery. Supervisor Horn, along with San Diego County Farm Bureau President, Noel Stehly, discussed the many benefits of buying locally grown products.

“Great soil, great water, and great weather all add up to fantastic flavor. You just can’t beat the flavor of California grown produce,” said Supervisor Horn. “When shoppers, restaurants and businesses buy locally grown products, the farms benefit the local economy benefits and the consumer benefits with fresh food and floral products.”

San Diego County has more small farms than any other county in the nation, producing more than 200 different commodities. Milk, eggs, grapes, avocados, nursery products, almonds, beef, strawberries and tomatoes are some of our top products. When you buy home grown, you significantly reduce your “food miles,” or the travel time from farm to plate. Your food is fresher. It is also closely regulated, including the County’s 350 registered organic farmers.
