Carlsbad Police Officers, Driver And Passenger Injured In Traffic Collision

CARLSBAD–Carlsbad police officers Sunday were injured when a pick-up truck collided into their patrol vehicle in Carlsbad.

Authorities say the 7:14 p.m. traffic collision occurred at the intersection of Poinsettia Lane and El Fuerte Street.

When assisting officers arrived, they found a Carlsbad police patrol vehicle with extensive front-end damage in the intersection of Poinsettia Lane and El Fuerte Street. Officers also found a Ford F-150 pick-up east of the intersection on its side. The Ford pick-up was occupied by two adult males who were seriously injured. Bystanders were rendering aid to the occupants of the pick-up.  Carlsbad firefighters arrived and extracted the occupants of the pick-up. Paramedics transported the driver of the Ford pick-up via air ambulance to Scripps Hospital, La Jolla. The passenger of that vehicle was transported to Scripps Hospital, La Jolla by ground ambulance. Both subject are reported to have major injuries.

Officers involved in the collision were transported to Scripps Hospital, Encinitas with minor injuries. Both were treated for their injuries and released.

The California Highway Patrol will conduct an investigation. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the collision.
