CAMP PENDLETON–A Camp Pendleton Marine attached to Assault Amphibian School Battalion died after the assault vehicle he was in sank near the Oceanside Harbor.
Sgt. Wesley J. Rice, 27, of San Antonio, Texas, died Jan. 14 after the vehicle sank in the Del Mar boat basin during a training exercise. Rice was serving as an instructor at the battalion.
Rice, an Assault Amphibious Vehicle Crewman, deployed twice to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Rice earned the following awards during his service: Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary
