OTAY MESA–Firefighters on the ground and in the air continue to battle the Caliente fire that broke out Thursday afternoon near the U.S./Mexican border, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
Firefighters fought the fast-moving, intense flames from the air using four water-dropping helicopters, while three brush strike teams and regional resources work to extinguish the blaze near the 5300 block of Airway Road and Caliente Avenue.
About 490 acres were burned and the blaze is 50% contained, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue. Fire crews will remain stationed in the burn area checking for hot spots.
As a precaution, San Diego Police Department issued mandatory evacuation notices south of St. Andrews, west of La Media and east of Cactus Rd. Evacuees were temporarily sent to a shelter set up by the Red Cross at San Ysidro High School.
All evacuation notices were lifted Thursday evening. Southbound CBX is also now open.
