CA Sen. Patricia Bates announces housing planning grants for San Diego county

June 8, 2021 By sdcnews

Sacramento, CA–Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) has announced that the California Department of Housing and Community Development has awarded a $750,000 Local Early Action Planning (LEAP) grant to the County of San Diego and a $500,000 LEAP grant to the City of Carlsbad to help create more housing supply.

“I thank HCD for awarding vital funding to San Diego County,” said Senator Bates, vice-chair of the Senate Housing Committee. “The grants will help lay the foundation needed to provide for the county’s housing needs now and in the future. I will continue to ensure my district receives its share of state resources.”

Funding for the grants comes from the 2019-20 state budget, which allocated $250 million to help prioritize planning activities that accelerate housing production. HCD established LEAP with $119 million in one-time grant funding for cities and counties.

The County of San Diego will use its grant to create objective design and development standards. It will also update its “Housing Element” document, which provides an analysis of community housing needs for all income levels and strategies to provide for those needs. The City of Carlsbad will use its grant to create accessory dwelling unit (ADU) prototypes, update its Housing Element, and create objective design standards.
