SAN DIEGO—A small fire today spread from a heavily brushed area along State Route 94 to the vicinity of Campo Road and Via Mercado in unincorporated La Mesa, Sheriff’s deputies said on Friday.
The blaze traveled up a hill towards residences along the area of Del Rio Road, prompting deputies to close roads and order evacuations.
Deputies from the Rancho San Diego station, as well as deputies from the Santee, Lakeside, and Lemon Grove stations assisted in evacuations, road closures, and scene protection. Residents were directed to Monte Vista High School.
California Highway Patrol shut down eastbound lanes of State Route 94 at Avocado Blvd. while Sheriff’s deputies shut down adjacent residential streets in the affected area.
Firefighters from Cal Fire, with the aid of Sheriff’s ASTREA firefighting helicopter, battled the blaze using water drops.
Cal Fire says the blaze is 100-percent contained. No structures were damaged.
