SAN DIEGO–Authorities are searching for a male wanted on suspicion of installing a skimming device in an ATM outside Point Loma Credit Union.
The device was discovered on March 25 when a customer’s card almost got stuck in the ATM, located in the 10000 block of Craftsman Way at the 4S Commons Shopping Center in 4S Ranch, according to San Diego police.
The customer alerted the bank’s manager who discovered a cover plate or skimmer found taped on top of the card slot and money dispenser.

A skimmer is a device that mimics an ATM card reader to steal data. It duplicates a person’s card, which is then used for purchases without the victim even knowing it.
If you use this ATM in 4S Ranch, check your bank and credit card statements for fraudulent charges.
Your Defense Against Skimming:
- Inspect before using – Beware of ATMs whose card slots are a different color than the rest of the machine, have an unusual cover plate, keypad or sides or overhead (which can hide a camera). If the slot is not securely attached or don’t accept your card smoothly, walk away. Newer ATMs have flashing or steady light at the card slot. If it’s covered, suspect tampering.
- Jiggle the card reader – If you think an area around an ATM looks peculiar, pull on it. If it comes off or loosens, alert the bank manager, but leave the machine as you found it. Leaving evidence in place could help law enforcement in tracking down a suspect.
- Hide It – When entering a PIN, cover the numeric keypad with your hand or wallet to protect your personal information.
- Examine the Keypad – Does the keypad look thick? Notice how it feels to type your PIN code. If it’s difficult to punch the keys or you feel resistance, there could be something on top of the real keypad.
- Monitor – Keep close tabs on your ATM and credit card transactions. Most banks offer real-time alerts via text message or email.
