Authorities Investigate Attempted Murder Of A San Diego Police Officer

May 3, 2016 By sdcnews

SAN DIEGO–Detectives are searching for leads in attempted murder of a police officer in San Diego.

Police officers say a man Monday evening stepped out of a white Toyota Corolla and fired several gunshots at a plainclothes San Diego police detective.

The detective, assigned to the San Diego Police Gang Unit, was in an unmarked vehicle and was following up on information of gang activity in the area of Glencoe Drive and Jamacha Road.

The detective was not injured by the gunfire, but his vehicle was struck several times.

Patrol officers responded to the area and found the suspect vehicle driving west on 7700 Jamacha Road where they initiated a high-risk traffic stop of the suspect vehicle. During the traffic stop, an adult male exited the vehicle and started to flee.

A patrol officer, fearing for his life and the safety of other officers, fired one round from his service weapon. It is not known whether or not the suspect was injured by the gunfire. The suspect continued to evade officers as he fled through several backyards. Responding officers quickly established a perimeter in an attempt to locate the suspect believed to be armed and dangerous, but were unable to locate him. Two adult male occupants and a female who remained in the vehicle were taken into custody. The female suspect, 31-year-old Kimberly Denise Hooker, was booked in Las Colinas Female Detention Facility for attempt murder for her role in the shooting. The two male occupants were arrested and booked for weapon charges and a probation violation. Their role in the shooting has not yet been determined. They are still being investigated as to their involvement in the incident.

Homicide detectives found a handgun located inside the suspect vehicle. The shooting officer is an 8-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department.
