OCEANSIDE–A 7 year-old female pedestrian was struck Sunday afternoon by a vehicle and later died at a local hospital, an Oceanside police spokesman said today.
Officers say the child was hit by a black Tundra. The driver of the Tundra pulled over and waited for emergency personnel to arrive. The child was taken to Tri-City Medical Center, but succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased by the emergency personnel at 2:30 p.m.
The collision occurred as the victim and her family were waiting to cross Mission Avenue about 200 yards west of Ocean Pointe. As the family was waiting the girl darted out from the family group and into the westbound lanes of traffic. The Toyota Tundra was travelling westbound in the number one lane of Mission Ave. The driver, 82 year old, Richard White Sr., observed the group and began to slow down. White said he did not see the child as she was shielded by a male adult when she suddenly ran out in front of his vehicle. He was unable to stop or take evasive action to avoid striking her.
Speed nor alcohol were factors in this collision. The investigation is being handled by the Oceanside Police Department’s MAIT Team.
