Oceanside, CA–Seventeen students from two Oceanside high schools will share $100,000 in scholarship funds as recipients of the 2022 City of Oceanside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. scholarship awards.
The students will be introduced at the annual Garden Reception, to be held on May 27 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the home of Stephen and Janet Lacy.
The Garden Reception is the sole fundraising event for the scholarship program, according to city officials in a news release.
The scholarship has awarded $1,060,500 to 389 Oceanside students since 1993. The program is open to all high school seniors who live in Oceanside regardless of which high school they attend. Applicants must write an essay on how they will apply the life and teachings of Dr. King to their own lives. The essay, plus demonstrated financial need, are the major criteria for the awards.
Tickets are $40 per person and are available by calling (760) 722-1234. All funds raised at the Garden Reception go directly to the scholarship program; the City of Oceanside sponsors the program, but no public funds are used. Local business and corporate sponsors provide funds for the reception.
